Government and War | |
Government and war go hand in hand. Only a monopoly of force that can extort any resources it wants and enslave people to fight can gather together the bodies and weapons needed to wage war as we know it. Taxation is the linchpin of this deadly power. The 20th Century proved, if you were paying any attention, that taxation is the great enemy of civilization. How do you think Hitler paid for that army? With voluntary contributions? How did Stalin pay for the Gulag Archipelago? With baked goods sales?Anarchic societies do not see conflict on the same scale as their contemporaries. Medieval Iceland, for instance, was so peaceful that the civil "war" that ended their Anarchic society had a murder rate equivalent to that of modern America. Instead of constant wars as were seen in Europe at that time, Icelandic society was peaceful and cooperative [1]. To the average citizen, war is a useless evil, and patriotism must be trumped up before anyone rallies behind any war. The only factions that do benefit from war are the military-industrial complex, and of course government. The latter is the one that benefits the most, since war provides it with the most efficient means to expand its power: War is the health of the State. It automatically sets in motion throughout society those irresistible forces for uniformity, for passionate cooperation with the Government in coercing into obedience the minority groups and individuals which lack the larger herd sense. The machinery of government sets and enforces the drastic penalties. Randolph BourneIf we agree on the moral principle that killing people without justification is evil, then government must also be declared evil. Anyone who desires peace must be against government. Whoever wishes peace among peoples must fight statism. Ludwig von MisesGo home. |
